Initially, the precocious puberty of the McCune-Albright syndrome is autonomous, but exposure to oestrogens or androgens over a period of time may convert the patients to GnRH-dependent precocious puberty such as that which may occur after successful suppression of androgen secretion in patients with virilising disorders. Testolactone has been effective as initial therapy in girls with McCune-Albright syndrome, as has medroxyprogesterone acetate or cyproterone acetate, while GnRH agonist has been effective later after maturation of the hypothalamic-pituitary-gonadal axis occurs.
